About Mastectomy
Post-Op Mastectomy Care
Our goal is to provide patients
with continued compassionate care and support while they adjust
to their new physical appearance. One of our nurses is a certified
prosthesis fitter . She in most cases will have already established
a relationship with you and will discuss the prosthetic options
with you.
What is a breast prosthesis?
A breast prosthesis
or breast form is an artificial
breast which is used after
surgery. It is worn in order
to simulate the natural breast
and body shape. These forms
come in a variety of materials,
usually silicone, foam, or
fiberfill.
Why would I need a breast prosthesis?
A prosthesis not only allows
a woman to wear the clothing
she did prior to surgery,
but also helps to balance
posture, preventing back,
neck pain, and curvature
of the spine.
What is a mastectomy bra?
A bra that has special
pockets sewn inside the cup that
hold the prosthesis in
place.
When will I be fitted
for a prosthesis?
You will be given a camisole
at your first post-op
appointment. The camisole
is a soft undergarment with a fiberfill form
which you may wear until
all post-op swelling has diminished,
usually six to eight
weeks after your operation.
In most cases six to
eight weeks after surgery
you will be ready for your first
fitting for a mastectomy
bra and breast prosthesis. Normally
two visits are required.
One for the initial fitting
and a second fitting
when your order arrives
to ensure proper fit.
Will Medicare cover
this?
Yes, Medicare pays
for the cost of the prosthesis and bras. Unlike
some establishments, we file the Medicare
claim for you.
